School of Constructivist Counseling & Coaching
“Traveller, there is no road; you make your path as you walk…” (A. Machado)
A radical reimagining of what it means to be human. A theory that unleashes potential for radical change.
“In this new way of thinking about psychology, there is no learning, no motivation, no emotion, no cognition, no stimulus, no response, no ego, no unconscious, no need, no reinforcement, no drive. It is not only that these terms are abandoned; that is more important, the concepts themselves evaporate.”
- George Kelly

Constructivism is a dynamic, holistic view of human beings that places meaning at the center of our psychological life. Constructivist psychology is particularly sensitive to individual differences and the minutia of every person’s personal experience, making it particularly suitable for the complex, diverse world we live in. The central notion in constructivist psychology is that humans don’t discover meaning, but create it, by acting in the world, making choices and processing what happens to us. Constructivism is a psychology of potential. It sees persons as perpetually changing and evolving, giving us a sophisticated technology to become better people and learn from our past, instead of staying stuck in old, ineffective worldviews.

PCP is one of the many flavors of constructivist psychology. PCP was founded by George Kelly, a mid-20th century American psychologist. His theory is the most comprehensive constructivist psychology created to date and the kind of psychology we teach at the Constructivist Studio. Kelly’s fundamental view of human beings is as active, meaning-making agents capable of reshaping their environment and themselves through continuous process of experimentation. Kelly’s is a psychology of hope: it is not meant to be a system that tells you what’s normal, right or desirable. Instead, it’s there to offer a method to help you figure it out for yourself! Most psychological schools profess a certain way of thinking and set up norms. They may do so intentionally or implicitly. Constructivism is decidedly different. As constuctivists, we don’t judge or evaluate others through imaginary standards set by society or psychology. Instead, we view every person as they want to be seen: through their own lived experience. We approach every person’s lived experience with curiosity and intention to understand. Constructivism is truly a psychology for the challenges we see in the world today. It helps us understand all the nuances that make an individual special, while allowing us to connect in a meaningful way.
For constructivists, growth is meant to be a natural evolution of the path you’ve been setting up for yourself through your own choices and dreams, not a path created by others. The answer to “Why constructivism?” is a simple one: because no other theory offers the possibility to be seen without imposing meaning or norms on you.
